The story behind it goes back several hundred years ago when St Valentine helped Christians avoid persecution from Roman authorities by performing secret marriages for them. He was eventually arrested and imprisoned before being executed on 14th February 269 AD at Rome’s Praetorium (an imperial palace). Since then people have celebrated his death as well as his life by giving cards or gifts of flowers to their loved ones – hence why we now call this day “San Valentino” (“Saint Valentine”).
Valentine’s day is also a big deal in Italy and is celebrated throughout the country as a day for lovers.
The day is marked by couples spending time together, usually going on a date. They often exchange cards, flowers and chocolates. In some areas of Italy, women wear red and men wear white to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day (and sometimes both wear the colors).
